Chasing Arches (and Shade) in the Utah Heat

April 7, 2026

Arches National Park doesn’t ease you in. It immediately throws you into this dramatic, Mars-like landscape—massive red rock formations, endless sky, and more arches than you can count.

Every turn feels like a new “how is this even real?” moment.

We visited in August… which, in hindsight, was both bold and slightly unhinged.

The kind of heat that hits you the second you step out of the car and makes you question every life decision that led you there. And yet, somehow, it also made the entire experience more memorable.

Sunrise Start (Our Best Decision of the Trip)

We started our day before the sun had fully made its way over the horizon, and it turned out to be the smartest move we made the entire trip.

There’s something about the desert in the early morning that feels completely different. Cooler air, softer light, and a kind of stillness that you just don’t get later in the day. The rocks glow in this muted orange as the sun slowly rises, and for a moment, everything feels calm and manageable.

It gave us a false sense of confidence… but we’ll get to that.

What it did give us was space: fewer crowds, better light, and a chance to actually take it all in before the heat took over.

Midday Mission: Delicate Arch (Still Worth It)

By midday, we had fully lost the battle with the heat but we were committed to seeing Delicate Arch.

And yes… it was hot.

The kind of hot where the sun feels personal.

The hike felt longer, steeper, and significantly more intense under that midday sun but when the arch finally came into view, it still delivered.

It’s one of those landmarks you’ve seen a hundred times in photos, but standing there in person, it somehow feels bigger, more dramatic, and more earned.

And the photo op? Still absolutely worth it.

The “We Should’ve Brought More Water” Moment

There’s underestimating a hike… and then there’s underestimating a hike in the Utah desert in August.

We fell into the second category.

Between the dry air, relentless sun, and miles adding up faster than expected, we quickly realized we were playing a dangerous game with hydration. It’s one of those experiences that teaches you fast that this isn’t a casual stroll kind of park.

It demands respect.

12 Miles Later…

By the time we wrapped up the day, we had logged around 12 miles of hiking.

And let me tell you. We felt every single one of them!

Sweaty doesn’t even begin to cover it. The kind of sweaty where your clothes are sticking, your legs are questioning your ambition, and your only goal becomes finding shade (which, in Arches, is… limited).

But there’s also something incredibly satisfying about it.

You earn those views.

Lessons From the Desert

Arches gave us incredible scenery but it also gave us a few hard-earned lessons:

  • Start early. Earlier than you think you need to.
  • Bring more water than feels reasonable. Then add more.
  • Respect the heat; it’s not forgiving.
  • And don’t rush it. The beauty here deserves your time.

Would We Do It Again?

In a heartbeat.

Maybe not in August next time… but then again, there’s something about pushing through the heat, chasing sunrise, and collapsing into the car after miles of hiking that makes it all stick with you a little more.

Arches isn’t just a place you visit, it’s a place you feel.

And trust me… you’ll feel it [the miles and the sunburn] for days after.
